House of Prayer

"Even them I will bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on My altar; for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations." Isaiah 56:7

When Pastor Gene heard the call of the Lord to go to Utah and establish a Christian presence in ten cities, he immediately thought of beginning churches in each of the ten cities. He inquired of the Lord which cities to go to, but the Lord told him he could pick out the ten he wanted. In the miracle of the first church starting so easily, and being predominately Spanish-speaking, Pastor Gene thought this would be the way of the ministry in Utah.

Pastor Gene left that first church, Orem Christian Center, in the hands of a Spanish-speaking pastor and moved on to begin another church. He chose the area of North Utah County and began knocking doors in Lehi. He immediately met a family who desired to have a Christian church in that town, so he started working on building one. It was hard ground to plow and sow and the harvest was pretty sparse. In the meantime, the Spanish-speaking pastor he'd left OCC with went to California to take a church there, leaving a scraggle of a few remaining members with the Shorts.

Pastor Gene then began to seek the Lord in earnest for the rest of the county. Orem Christian Center changed her name to Light the Way Christian Fellowship, and had services in south Orem, then in Provo, but the rest of the County had few if any Christians in it. Then the Lord led Pastor Gene to this passage in Isaiah 56: "...for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations." Pastor Gene came to realize that the Christian presence in ten cities was to be in the form of cell groups, small Bible studies in homes in those ten cities. The church would all meet together in the Provo/Orem area once a week, then become mini-churches based out of houses in the areas in which the people lived.

Houses of Prayer are popping up all over Utah County, now. Pastor Gene's vision has broadened as he had a dream of the state of Utah with little lights all over it, and realized that each light represented a House of Prayer. There are currently 9 HOPs meeting (as of 1/10) and there are plans to begin more as the church grows further and leader/teachers are raised up for them. The vision has become to have 20 Houses of Prayer in ten cities in 2010. Of the ten cities chosen, five cities, representing over 47,000 people, do not have any kind of Christian presence. Our dream is to establish HOPs in those cities by helping Christian families to rent or buy homes in them.

Each House of Prayer in Utah County has a unique flavor and a unique emphasis. Some are for new Christians. Some are for seasoned veterans. Some are in English only and some are Spanish only (this is to give people the chance to fully understand what is being taught and to ask questions as needed).
